Weniger Telefonzellen?

Johnny Cash dies at Age 71

The legendary singer Johnny Cash died today, after having left hospital on Tuesday morning.

As a kid, he meant nothing to me – Johnny Cash was somebody I associated with “Ring of Fire” and Country music. Lately, through the two albums of American Recordings, I’ve become a big fan of his. I’ve listened to both albums more than any other over the last year. If you haven’t, now is the time.

Yet another of my musical heroes dies before I got a chance to see him in concert. I missed John Lee Hooker, and I’m positive that the next chance I get to see B.B. King or Santana live, it doesn’t matter what the price is, I’ll go.

Beerdrinkers and Hellraisers

Went to see ZZ Top in concert at Rockefeller last night. We were standing 3 meters from the stage, I had a great view, and Morten says his ears are still ringing today. It is probably the most intimate concert on the tour, since Rockefeller is a really small place to begin with, and it looks like they had lots of fun playing in front of such a small audience. The crowd was wild, they didn’t need any warming up at all, and ZZ Top played a nice mix of tunes mostly from Deguello and Tres Hombres, both rock and blues.

If you ever get a chance to see them in concert, do. Definitely worth seeing. And check out the Mescalero album when it comes out. Review from oslopuls.no is here.

Currently reading: Good Omens

I’m re-reading Good Omens right now. I was actually looking for Neverwhere, but our local bookstore did not have it i stock. So I got the only Neil Gaiman book they had, even though I already knew it. It’s hilarious.

Short plot summary: Armageddon is coming about, and the world will end. Aziraphale (an angel) and Crowley (a fallen angel), have lived among humans so long that alll that free will stuff has rubbed off on them, and they kinda like humans and earth, so they decide to interfere with the ineffable plan and stop Armageddon…

If you like Terry Pratchett, you will like this book. But it’s not one of his usual Discworld books or something like Johnny and the dead – the dark humour and great storytelling of Neil Gaiman add a very new twist, making this one of the best books either author has written. My first Gaiman book, this left me hungry for more.

Spam Killers II

I’ve had feedback on last week’s Spam Killers entry, and there are three ways I’ve tested now that work well for windows.

SpamPal

Very easy to install, very versatile, works fine with multiple accounts, and is reasonably fast. It detects about 85% of all my spam, which is far from the results given by spam assassin, but pretty good given the easy install. Recommended! It’s open source, too!

Mail Washer

Morten Byom, our lead Anarchy Online worldbuilder, showed me this one, and while I haven’t tried it out yet, it looks pretty cool. Also easy to set up, you could even give this to your dad.

Hamster & Spam Assassin

This is pretty tough stuff, it requires a lot of work, and while the result is pretty damn good, it just may not be worth it. It’s also very slow. The idea is to set up a loval mailserver (Hamster), and run a windows compiled spamassassin whenever it fetches mail from your account.

Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries Mini-Review

And here’s my mini-review of MW4M: I didn’t like MW3, and never played MW4 for lack of a good computer. So my MechWarrior experience is from back when MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries was hot, and boy, was that a great game. The good news: MW4M is almost as much fun as MW2M was. The missions have a little less variety, my favourite Clan Mech (Nova) isn’t available, but the controls are almost identical, the graphics are much improved, although not top-notch anymore, and it’s still very hard. I did a citycombat mission yesterday, and it was great, jumping behind office blocks for cover, running thtough the streets with guns blazing. This title makes up for the disappointing MechAssault (shame on Microsoft for that one. We’d like to call it MechInsult), a worthy heir to the throne of best Mech game.
