I updated to mirc 6.11 today, and while doing that, browsed the author’s web-pages. Khaled is a vegetarian like me, and he links to a really good description of the kind of attitude meat-eaters are showing when they hear that I’m a vegetarian.
I recognize pretty much everything on the page. So if you’re not a vegetarian, and don’t want to make an ass of yourself the next time you meet one of them, read these simple edicts and take them to heart:
I bought new climbing shoes a while ago. They were on sale for just 600 NOK ($86), and I couldn’t let that opportunity pass, although my current shoes (Boreal Pyros) are still really good.
This is my fourth pair, Red Chili Habaneros, and they fit me really nice in the store. I’m saving them for a really difficult day, where I need the extra bit of support on a piece of small structure 🙂
Der Zoo in Cincinatti hat zwei Sumatra-Nashörner. Das Baby Rhino kann man sich im Web auf einer Rhino Cam anschauen. Das coole: Die Kamera hat ein Applet, mit dem man sie fernsteuern kann, wenn das kleine mal nicht perfekt zur Kamera positioniert ist.
Habe gerade dem Zoowärter beim Ausmisten zugeschaut. Anderen bei der Arbeit zugucken ist fast so toll wie selber arbeiten…
Es gibt auf der Welt noch etwa 300 Sumatra-Nashörner, von allen 5 Nashorn-Arten sind sie damit nach den Java-Nashörnern (60 Exemplare) am zweitmeiten bedroht. Leider klappt mein Plan, mit savetherhino.org nach Borneo zu fahren, dieses Jahr nicht (wegen der E3, die kurz danach ist), aber dafür fange ich jetzt an, für Anfang Oktober 2004 den Trip zum Kilimanjaro zu planen. Mehr Infos dazu kommen später sicher noch…
Ja. Wirklich. In Deutschland bekommt amn das nicht mit, habe ich gehört, aber hier in Norwegen ist das Finale der Frauen-Fußball WM am Sonntag ein Top-Thema in den Sportnachrichten. Und dabei sind die Norweger noch nichtmal im Endspiel.
Für alle, die es nicht wissen: Deutschland spielt am Sonntag gegen Schweden.Ein Blick in die Welt heute zeigt, dass das daheim keiner wahrnimmt. Statt dessen wird da über Hackmann und Lenin, Eishockey oder Fahrerewechsel in der Formel 1 berichtet.
Schaut man mal ins Land des Gegners, z.B. bei aftonbladet, sieht das ganz anders aus: Auf der ersten Seite des Sportteils sind komplett alle Artikel dem Finale gewidmet. Überschrift: “WM Finale: Noch 3 Tage!”. Wer wissen will, was Birgit Prinz und ihre kolleginnen machen, muß schwedisch verstehen.
Und wenn in Deutschland schonmal über das Finale berichtet wird, dann in kleinen Blättern wie dem Bocholt-Borkener Volksblatt. Und der Artikel ist auch eigentlih nicht über die Frauen, sondern darüber, dass Klinsman und Mayer-Vorfelder die Frauen ehren, weil sie zum Finale gekommen sind. Na toll.
Last week I finished dogs of riga, the second book in the Kurt Wallander series. Like the previous two books I read from Henning Mankell, it is an excellent crime novel. This time it plays in the early 90s, times of change in Latvia where Wallander is sent to investigate a murder. I’m reading this in norwegian, to improve my working vocabulary, and it’s working out quite nicely. It’s apparently better to read it in swedish, though. Oh, well…
Yesterday I finished another classic, the lonelyness of the long-distance runner. It’s a short story, and was apparently hailed because it’s an early example of literature from a working-class perspective. I’m not sure it’s such an important book today. The narrative is interesting, though, it’s one long monologue that the main character has while he’s running.
Die Post hat Berichte des Westfalen-Blattes dementiert, nahc denen sie 35.000 Telefonzellen abbauen will. Aber das sie 15.000 durch Basis-Telefone ersetzen will, stimmt wohl doch. 20.000 Zellen der Post sind darüber hinaus unwirtschaflich. Diese hier ist bestimmt darunter.
Außer an Flughafen und Bahnhof, wo die Dinger sicher nict unrentabel sind, ahbe ich schon seit Ewigkeiten keine Zelle mehr benutzt. Und seit ich das Handy habe, ohnehin nicht mehr…

Yikes. I just managed to overwrite one of my articles with a new one. That’s what you get for only writing frequently – you forget the quirks of your posting software.
Luckily I made scripts a while ago that take a daily backup of the mysql database, so everything was still there 🙂 When it comes to missing backups, I’m one of those people who got burnt too many times, so I’m extra-careful now.
A few months ago I discovered tinyurl.com. It takes a long URL and generates a short one for you. So http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/3423202947 becomes http://tinyurl.com/q4wz, which is a dynamically generated redirection to the original page.
What can you use that for? Anytime that space is precious. I use it for ebay links in news postings, for links in IRC topics, for email messages and SMS. I even use it in my mail signature to make references for literary quotes 🙂
