Foxmarks rocks

Foxmarks is a more recent addition to my ever-growing list of Firefox Extensions, but it’s already proven itself many times. What it essentially does is upload my bookmarks to a server, and any time firefox starts, compare the local bookmarks to the server version to synchronize the two.

This makes a lot of sense if you have a scenario like me:

  • A computer dual-booting into Linux and Windows
  • A desktop and a laptop
  • A computer at home and one at work

In either of these cases, one Firefox session doesn’t generally share the bookmarks file with the other, but thanks to Foxmarks, it can share the same file on the server. So if I add a new bookmark when I’m at work, this will show up on my desktop at home. When I add one in my Windows session, it appears in the browser even when I boot to Linux. The Desktop and Laptop have the same bookmarks, too.

Of course, there’s always something to be desired:

  • I don’t know enough about the privacy aspect of this.
  • I would like to chose bookmark folders that aren’t synched. Certain links should not be on my work PC 🙂
  • I would like to chose bookmark folders to share with others (although that’s opening a can of worms, I guess).

Jørn tells me that Google Sync does the same thing, except it’s tied to a Google account. I don’t think it addresses my wishes, so I think I’ll stick with what I know for now.
