Ich hatte vor einer Weile einen Palm Zire. Den habe ich gekauft, weil er günstig war, und ich eigentlich einen Palm nur als “erweitertes Gehirn” für Notizen, Adressen und evtl. Mail lesen auf der Busfahrt brauche.

Gestört haben mich aber dann doch zwei Dinge: Zuerst einmal das fehlende Backlight. Das Display ist in der Dämmerung schwer zu lesen, nachts unmöglich. Wenn man in einem Land lebt, wo es im Winter so früh dunkel wird wie hier, ist das unmöglich, aber auch im Sommer hat es schon gestört.

Und dann die Tastatur. Ich bin wirklich schnell mit Graffiti, aber trotzdem braucht das Aufschreiben seine Zeit, und vor allem kann ich nicht gleichzeitig schreiben und denken oder zuhören, weil es volle Konzentration braucht. Und der Zire läßt sich ja nicht erweitern wie andere Palms.

Also habe ich mir dann einen m130 gekauft. Der hat Farbe (brauche ich nicht), ein Backlight, 8 MB und den Erweiterungsslot für die Tastatur. Was er nicht hat, ist den direkten USB-Anschluß, den der Zire hatte. Warum nicht, ist mir ein Rätsel, denn das war echt klasse: Der Zire braucht keine Dockingstation, und er lädt sich sogar über USB auf (langsamer als über Netz, aber immerhin). Der m130 braucht naturgemäß mehr Strom (Farbdisplay und schnellerer Prozessor), und man ist auf den Cradle angewiesen.

Das beste aber ist die Tastatur. Ich habe bei meiner letzten Deutschland-Reise für 44 Euro ein Logitech TypeAway Keyboard gekauft, das ist kleiner als das Keyboard von Palm, aber ideal für unterwegs im Zug oder für Meeting-Notizen und um schnell mal emails aus der Hüfte zu schiessen. Oder für blog-Einträge 🙂

Ich habe eine Reihe öffentlicher Benutzerprofile (Datenschutz? Wie?). Gewisse Dinge über mich kann die Welt gerne wissen, adnere halte ich vor ihr verborgen.

I like the idea of a small world. That everyone is no more than six degrees of separation apart from every other person on the planet means that we’re really not that different and we should be able to communicate and overcome our problems.

This article is part of a series of comments I will be writing about games that changed my perception of what a good game is. Some of the games you may not know, some may not be on anybody else’s “best of” list, but they have changed me, and that’s why they are here.

Game #3: Leisure Suit Larry

My first computer was a 8088 PC. I was 14 then, and the first adventure I played on it was Larry.

Up until then, adventures had never included the character so that you could navigate him through the screens. I knew Transylvania, the Hobbit and Zork. Here was something new, somebody had reinvented how we play an adventure – first came text adventures, then graphics, then a character. And later, the mouse got added. And even later, everything was point & click. Now, adventures are more and more fully 3D environments. And the important bit to remember that the form may change, but at the heart, an adventure is about interactive storytelling. Whichever way you do it.

I learnt a lot of English from Larry. I’d had two years of english in school, and needed a dictionary to play. There are words in the English language that I still connect to this game, because I heard them there first: ribbed, hooker and pimp, of course. But also lint, cab, dumpster and even fire escape. When I was asked where I learnt so much english as a kid, I named Larry.

Larry 1 also had the now legendary age check, and that taught me two things: First, that you cannot use technical measures to prevent children from playing something you don’t want them to play. The parents need to pay attention to what their kids are doing. And secondly, that americans had a very strange conception of what was suitable for children. There is no violence in Larry, and the sex scenes are really harmless – most of them are covered up by black bars! My parents never objected to me playing it, at least not that I remember.

The end of Sierra Online and the killing of all those great adventures is a lesson in how big corporations can kill innovation and drive out the creative folks that their good fortune was built on. I look at Sierra today and weep, thinking of the good games and licenses that are forever lost.

Al Lowe, the creator of Larry, was my first hero in the adventure games business. He put humor in the game, so much of it, too – he even poked fun at Sierra themselves, and put co-workers or himself into the game. It was great stuff! I wish him that he gets an offer to make Larry 4 one day, because I want to play it. I would even like working on it myself.

Es ist, wenn ich so drüber nachdenke, schon sehr erstaunlich dass ich auf der Games Convention von so vielen potenziellen Spielern gefragt wurde, ob es Anarchy Online denn auch in deutsch gäbe. Vor ein paar Jahren habe ich meine Landsleute noch für relativ fit in Fremdsprachen gehalten, aber seitdem hat sich meine Einstellung gründlich geändert. Ich habe eingesehen, dass es auf dem deutschen Markt von enormem Vorteil ist, eine lokalisierte Version zu haben. Und das wir einen Server mit ausschliesslich deutschen Spielern und GMs haben, kommt bei den Fremdkultur-scheuen Deutschen offensichtlich auch sehr gut an.

Das ich wirklich einer von wenigen Exoten bin, betrübt mich. Ich wünschte mir, man könne an der Tatsache etwas ändern, aber das geht wohl nicht ohne dass von Seiten der grossen Bildungseinrichtungen (sprich: den Fernsehsendern) etwas passiert. Solange selbst unübersetzbare Sendungen wie Beavis&Butthead oder Monty Python noch auf Deubel-komm-raus in eine deutsche Synchro gequält werden, sehe ich da aber keine Besserung.

In unserer Kletterhalle sind, während wir den Sommer über im Freien klettern gegangen sind, neue Routen geshraubt worden. Heute habe ich drei davon geflasht, davon eine 6 und eine 6+. An der vierten, einem 6+ Überhang, habe ich zwei Versuche gebraucht, aber insgesamt kein schlechter Tag für mich. Jetzt ist eine 6+ Route nichts ungewöhnliches, aber dass ich in der Lage bin, die im ersten Versuch zu klettern, für mich schon.

Falls das Wetter noch bis Sonntag hält, gehe ich nochmal raus. Aber im großen und ganzen neigt sich die Sommerkletterei dem Ende, und wie es aussieht, werde ich dieses Jahr Sånn-ja doch nicht bezwingen…
